Using figures in a landscape painting can really add to the piece. If I just painted entrance to the bridge, I believe the piece would be less interesting and tell less of a story. The story helps the piece to come alive. It gives the viewer a reason to stay focused on the work and on the reason why the bridge was built in the first place.
